Buying a smartphone isn't the simplest decision you will
ever make. You need to be smart, considering the range, variety and the
plethora of specks on offer.

This comes so far down this list because I believe it’s
relevant only to someone who needs the phone’s camera quite often. Don’t go by
just the specs and mega pixels, take test shots in good lighting conditions and
also in not very brightly lit room. This will give you a fair idea of what the
performance will be like. We have seen 8MP cameras on perform much better than
12MP cameras on other phones.

Not everything that comes within the package should impact
your buying decision. And this is particularly true when choosing between two
phones that are very similar on the specs as well as the price tag.
❶DISPLAY SIZE AND TYPE
This is what defines how small/big or portable the phone
will be, and also the comfort of using the on-screen keypad is pretty dependent
on screen real estate. If you text or IM a lot, you will need at least a 4-inch
display.
As far as the display type is concerned, you don’t want to spend
above rs.30, 000 and still be stuck with a plain LCD/LED display, while the
rivals are toting the S-LCD2’s and the AMOLED family of displays. If you use
your phone to watch movies, the colour depth and crispness should be of utmost
priority.
❷KEYPAD
On-screen keypads are a bit like snowflakes – no phone manufacturers
seem to have the same on-screen keypad on their devices. Hence, identifying the
most comfortable one for you is all about checking out the devices in person.
What also matters is how well the keyboard UI is designed.

❸BATTERY
With the processors
becoming more and more powerful and adding on more and more cores, and the ever
increasing display size, battery life does take a pounding. Which is why, a
battery rated at 17550mAh, 1900mAh and even 2100mAh have becoming standard with
smartphones. You will also need to figure out what you’ll do with your phone,
and how successful your usage pattern will be. These days, any Android phone
that gives a battery backup of a day and
a half is considered very good, and a day on a single charge is pretty much
standard.
❹STORAGE
With the ever increasing app sizes and everyone clicking
pictures and shooting videos, storage has a way of filling up fast. There are
two distinct categories of phone out there, some have loads of internal
storage, but no expansion slot, and those that offers expansion. You need to find
the balance, and think about how much space you’ll need. By rule of thumb, sit
down and calculate space based on your storage, and then double the storage
(minimum) you think you need.
❺OPERATING SYSTEM
The market is flooded with phones with a variety of OSes –
Android Gingerbread, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, Android Jelly Bean, Apple’s
iOS6, Windows Phone, Blackberry OS and Symbian Belle. These OSes are available
on phones spread across a variety of price points. However, variety is all well
and good, but you need to make a serious decision about which one suits you
best depending on the comfort level, and the features you may need. Each OS has
its unique interface and user experience aspects, and it’s very critical that
it’s exactly what you need. Also, if apps matter to you, do some homework and
see whether your favourite apps are available on the platform/OS you’re
considering. Variety on the apps stores does sway a lot of descions, and you
should consider the importance of the same. I suggest you don’t fall for the
glitter of a particular smartphone, before considering the software you’ll be
interfacing with.

❻SERVICE AND SUPPORT
This is a non-quantifiable aspect of buying a smartphone. I
have no comparison tests to prove the service of brand X is better than brand
Y, it all depends on the type of problem
with the device, and factors like the service centre location, attitude of
staff, and even the availability of
spares if needed. However, if you have been hearing bad feedback about a
particular brand from friends and acquaintances, and the same results are
mirrored online, it’s better to stay away from such a brand. After all, a lot
of people couldn't be wrong all time.
